Personal Year Card
Your Personal Year Card is a tarot archetype that shifts each calendar year. Unlike the birth card — which is fixed for life — the year card changes annually and describes the dominant energy available to you during the current twelve months.
What the Personal Year Card tells you
While the birth card frames the soul's entire curriculum across a lifetime, the Personal Year Card describes the theme available in a specific twelve-month period. It is a tool for annual intention-setting, course-correction, and recognizing which archetypal energies are active in the current cycle.
The Personal Year Card follows the same Major Arcana numbering (1–21) as birth cards. Some years a person's year card matches their birth card, which teachers in the Greer tradition describe as a "peak year" — a time when the lifetime archetype expresses with particular clarity.
How to calculate your Personal Year Card
- Sum the digits of your birth month and birth day.
Example: born September 15 → 0 + 9 + 1 + 5 = 15. - Sum the digits of the current calendar year.
Example: year 2026 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10. - Add both results together.
Example: 15 + 10 = 25. - Reduce by digit-sum until ≤ 22.
Example: 25 → 2 + 5 = 7. - Map the result to a Major Arcana card.
Example: 7 → The Chariot. Personal Year Card for 2026 is The Chariot.
If your result is 22, reduce one further step (2 + 2 = 4, The Emperor), following the same convention used for birth cards.

Year card vs. birth card: key differences
- Fixed vs. changing
- The birth card is fixed for life. The Personal Year Card changes every calendar year, cycling through the Major Arcana over roughly 21 years before repeating.
- Scope
- The birth card describes lifelong themes and soul curriculum. The year card describes the energy available in a specific twelve-month window — a lens, not a life sentence.
- Using them together
- Practitioners often read the year card in relation to the birth card. When the year card and birth card match, many teachers note a heightened period of alignment with one's core archetype. When they differ, the year card can describe the "guest energy" working alongside the birth card's lifelong theme.
