What Is a Tarot Soul Card?

The soul card is the single-digit reduction of your tarot birth card number. It represents the distilled essence beneath your personality archetype.

What the soul card represents

In the birth card system developed by Angeles Arrien and Mary K. Greer, the birth card is a Major Arcana number between 1 and 21. When that number is 10 or higher, it can be reduced one step further to a single digit (1–9) by adding its component digits. This single-digit result maps to one of the first nine Major Arcana cards — and that card is called the soul card.

The soul card is understood as the essential frequency underlying the birth card. Where the birth card (also called the personality card for double-digit numbers) describes the outer expression of the archetype, the soul card names its root. Two people can share a soul card while having different birth cards, meaning they move through the world differently yet operate from a common deeper current.

People whose birth card number is already 1–9 do not have a separate soul card — their birth card and soul card are the same. This is sometimes interpreted as a simpler or more unified archetype, but the interpretive weight of the single card is correspondingly greater.

How to find your soul card

  1. Calculate your birth card number using the full birth card algorithm.
  2. If the result is 1–9, your birth card and soul card are the same. Done.
  3. If the result is 10–21, add the two digits together.
    Example: birth card 17 (The Star) → 1 + 7 = 8 → soul card is 8 (Strength).
  4. The soul card number maps to the same Major Arcana numbering used for birth cards (1 = The Magician, 2 = The High Priestess, etc.).

The nine soul card archetypes

Only Major Arcana 1–9 can function as soul cards. Each of the nine cards below may be the soul card for one or more birth cards.
